The urgent need for affordable and sustainable housing requires a transdisciplinary approach that bridges knowledge across disciplines and sectors. Often treated as separate challenges, affordability and sustainability are deeply interrelated and require integrated solutions that address their shared complexities. These challenges are compounded by uncertainties, contested positions and high stakes in housing policy, urban planning and environmental impact. In such contexts, transdisciplinary research becomes essential as it transcends disciplinary boundaries to integrate different perspectives and actively engage non-academic stakeholders, fostering collaboration and the co-creation of innovative, practical solutions.
The RE-DWELL innovative training network equips researchers with transdisciplinary methods to tackle the interconnected challenges of affordable and sustainable housing. To achieve this, the project has developed a dynamic learning environment that cultivates the competencies professionals need to address housing issues from a transdisciplinary perspective.
